I mean, I know it's the right thing to do. But still...

The Bad: If I were to be completely honest, attempting to "garden" with them this week was beyond frustrating. The carrot seeds blew away. The barn cat sat on the garlic. The boys nearly knocked each other out with their long-handled rakes. The woodticks, fine. I can deal with those. Having to retrieve our runaway Bean from the pasture over and over? That gets old fast.

{for the record, I had no idea the boys were wearing almost-matching shirts}
The Good: The kids Daddy got some of the mud tilled up.

The Truth: We will get the garden in... eventually. Time spent climbing gates and running through the pasture and getting boots muddy isn't time wasted.

Believe me, we had the wood ticks (and a happy barn cat) to prove it.

LOL - at least they photograph well.
It isn't easy gardening with kids, I normally plant the majority of the stuff, but it's worth it in the end to slow down and involve them. My son says that your kitty looks just like ours. Then he wanted to know if he was visiting, lol!
I feel your pain! I felt the same way this past week! I felt guilty for just wanting to do it all myself. But deep down I know someday I'll wish I had little ones to "bother" me while I attempt to garden.
And the mud? It was fun a month ago. Now it is just getting so so so old.
i've had those days as well, and i only have one kiddo to keep track of. it does seem to get more fun every year as he gets older, is able to do more, and has a longer attention span.
although this year, i'm the one who dumped the kohlrabi seeds into the grass, broke the clematis vines while trying to train them up a lamp post and tripped over the rake i left laying on the ground.
Maybe it's just the photo, but that cat looks huge!?! My boys dress themselves, and often have that almost matching quality to their clothes; often. I *adore* that first shot! Ummmm, your grass is amazing!! *jealous* And I hope you have a better gardening week this next week. I look forward to seeing the photos of your garden(s) :)
I love how honest you are in this post...sometimes we forget that it isn't all fun when gardening with kiddos. Hmmmm I might just have found Thursday's kinderGARDEN post idea...thanks!
Your place is just stunning! Kim
Just hearing "wood ticks" makes me feel like there are bugs crawling all over me! Ick!
I love that last shot with the cat!
Now I know why my Mom had a "Kid's corner"! Congrats on getting some things in, and managing to take some pictures in the process.
Looks like a fantastic day!! Even if you didn't get the garden finished. :-)
You took me back a few years to when my kiddos were toddling around the garden, accidentally walking on seedlings. It's amazing what a difference a few years makes in the amount of true help they are able to offer. And yet, I think if I had kept them out & away from the garden, they wouldn't have the interest that they do now, at ages 8 and 5.
You're doing a good job. And you're right...it will get done...and it is certainly not time wasted.
Thank you for your visit! Your blog looks great, I'll be adding it to my list. Always great to find more farmer/gardeners in the blogging world, and your terrain looks pretty flat... perhaps you're from the midwest too!
Oh I loved this post! It's exactly what's happening in my yard on a daily basis. Yes, gardening had always been my happy me time when I first had babies, but now they are very involved. ;)
We've been planting for the last few days... and my 10 year old *still* steps on the freshly planted seeds. O.o Hopefully he gets the hang of it... eventually. ;)
Love the ladybug boots! :D
Yea, I'm totally there with ya---except my kids are teens and they are still a challenge in the garden--just wait til my post next week.
But the reward will come in small moments and at dinnertime and when they are grown and are gardening on their own 'cuz they have "great memories from when they were a kid."
Love your photos!
Haha this is so funny... my mother recently told me her grandmother LOVED to garden... because she had seven children and it was the only place she could get away from them!
