A Kinderwhat?

I promised our kids their very own swamp this year.

Garden. I meant... their own garden. Excuse me.

The kids are old enough.

The boys love everything garden related. I have a slight obsession with growing things, which means they're immersed in it year round. Kids are more willing to try new foods when they've planted the seed, watched it come alive, and harvested it with their own two grubby hands. But it's so much more than that. It's a whole magnificent experience.

The Bean is old enough now to destroy everything help too, which is very exciting.

We have big dreams.

Dreaming is just as important as seeds or healthy soil. I won't let my kids miss out on that.

One of our boys is obsessed with mazes, so we're planning a simple corn maze. When they saw the photos my friend Kirsten posted of her kiddo's bean tunnel, well, it absolutely had to go on the list too.

We have the space.

Last year I had three garden plots. Every Spring we seem to dig up yet another (higher) garden because someone is too impatient for the (lower) swamps gardens to dry out. Every year we have more water than we did the previous year, and... here we are solidly into May and I find myself eyeballing the space between my apple trees.

Everything is still soggy, except the barn, which means three things:

1. Our neighbors (who are real farmers and the kindest people in the world) can't get into their fields, which means my barn is already wearing it's shiny new roof.

2. The jungle is temporarily in the house.

Please notice the very professional use of oatmeal and baking soda in our lighting set up.

We even potted up twenty five strawberry plants because I was unsure how long they could stay refrigerated. I've never ever been unhappy to find a package of plants in the mail, until the day they arrived.

3. The Bean has been busy practicing her "helping" skills.

We're excited to document the journey along with the others at The Inadvertent Farmer. I discovered this project too late last year to join in, and it's been in the back of my mind all winter. Although, while everyone else has KinderGARDENS, we're more likely to have a Kinderswamp. We still have hope!

I can't wait to see the results of all your hard work in the swamp/garden!! :)

I'm just a little sad that I don't get to grow anything this year, but I'm already trying to figure out where I can put a garden in my new house.

I'm so excited to see what happens! I wish I had lots of garden plots, maybe one day once we get settled. Glad you are gardening with us this year. :)

Thanks for visiting my blog. You commented on the map of my garden. I used an online program from growveg.com. It is a FREE 30-day trial. You'll love it. Watch the quick-start video on the free-trial page. What a time saver. Let me know if you decide to use it and what you think.

Well that'll be fun - I might need to go on that track since I clearly didn't get enough lessons back in the day.

Thanks for stopping by my blog :) We both have 'helpful' Beans working with us this summer. Our neck of the woods is prone to swamp-like conditions as well - here's hoping for a hot, dryish summer to both of us!

:-) Glad you're joining the fun this year.
I always plant way too much for my garden space, which when factored in with the "help" I get from my 2 year old, (and the plants that don't survive it) it all seems to work out in the end.
Stay flexible. :-D Have fun!

Your oatmeal and baking soda make you my kind of mom! Practical and resourceful!
Welcome to KinderGardens, Hey, doesn't rice grow in swamps?

You're a real farmer, too! : ) But I know what you meant.

Okay....well....now that you are back here at this blog, you have hit the ground running and I just can't handle all the inspiration. I might do this Kindergardens thing, too......not planning to dig up another area of the yard this year.....but the kids do always help.....and this is just too fun.....and I have SO much time to blog in the summer...

I'm just gonna have to quit my job so I can try to stay on top of all this...... *sigh* : )

Somehow your pictures always manage to look amazing even when you have "professional" things like oatmeal and arm&hammer in the background!

Seriously, great idea. Good luck with the kindergardening!

What an awesome project! My wee ones are a bit too young yet for this and I know zilch about gardening, but I love looking through everyone's posts about it!

Great photos in this entry. Can't wait to see what your swamp turns into. :) :)

What fun! Some of my fondest memories are of helping in the garden. We even did a bean teepee one year! (Very cool for a little kid.) The bean tunnel sounds like fun as well!
