It's the kind of potted lovely you put outside to soak up summer and then rescue when the days get colder. Maybe you wouldn't have to invite it in the house where you live. But here, well, it wouldn't be magnificent at all if I had left it to fend for itself. Not a chance.
Did I mention it was all of twelve dollars?
There may have been a reason for that.
From the day I promised to love it forever, and brought it home, it's been infested with aphids. Impressively so. But the strange thing is, it doesn't seem to mind.
At one point I stuck it inside our barn when a severe thunderstorm rolled over our farm. It was safe from the hail but not the wind. After my beautiful beautiful Hibiscus fell over, someone's dang chickens ate every bloom, every leaf, every bit of green they could find on it. And by default, they ate the aphids too.
Chickens are nothing but trouble. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise.
It appeared to be a horribly tragic ending.
The Hibiscus grew back prettier than ever.
So did the aphids.
I've washed the dumb thing with soapy water. At least three times. These aphids are impressive too.
But the good news!
We keep finding ladybugs in the house!

Oh wait. That one doesn't eat aphids. At least to the best of my knowledge.
The other ones, we relocate them to ladybug paradise.

Where do they come from? Honestly, as long as they're not boxelder bugs or gigantic furry spiders, I really don't care.
These are the happiest ladybugs on the face of the earth.

It's really something to watch them create aphid-free zones. Although it's an uphill battle for them, they don't complain.

Cute! I love lady bugs.
I love *your* lady bug most of all! :) Although I would venture a bet that she has at least tasted an aphid in her days.....if she's anything like my little ladybug anyway, and I happen to know she is! :) Great pictures of all the ladybugs in your life! I need to know how you got the awesome background with The Bean, too, sometime....
Cute lady bug!
I don't know if I could handle having bugs inside my house, especially aphids. I don't know about lady bugs either. You're braver than I am.
great macro and equally wonderful story.
The first lady bug is adorable! I have released lady bugs in my yard several times, the clean the place up and take off. How lucky are you that they just show up! Well maybe not lucky but still what a wonderful show of nature doing its thing.
Your lady bugs are beautiful - so glad you decided to share them!
I love lady bugs! They are a challenge for me to photograph because they never sit still. Cute photo of the human lady bug too!
What a cute ladybug...your macros are lovely too.
Love it! Love it!
I'd rather have lady bugs in my house than pretty much anything else. It's nice that you have a good home for them. :)
BTW... the first ladybug is the cutest!
ladybugs are the only bugs that i don't mind :) they are too cute!
I love ladybugs and hate aphids. Nice shots.
Cute ladybug...I mean Bean...uh, I mean toddler. How did you acheive the studio white background look?
Will this be the first winter in the house for your hibiscus? I'll be interested to see how it turns out!
OK, now that first ladybug is one CUTE LIL' BUG!! Love it! :-)
Just another reason to love ladybugs! I love ladybugs! It's the stinky japanese beetles that I hate!
It's a ladybird banquet!! Tell them to invite their friends - the more, the merrier!
How funny. You can't kill the plant (not even the chickens can kill the plant) but you can't kill the aphids either! LOL!
oh, i love ladybugs. great photos.
Box Elder bugs - Arrrrrggggghhhhh!!! Scourge of the earth, pest of the decade....gawwwwwww!! (Can you tell you struck a chord? - lol) Do you have problems with those little beasties, too? Ack.
Your little ladybug is adorable - what a smile! :-)
That first ladybug is too adorable! :D
We had a hibiscus, too. It finally gave up. I had it three years... but this summer, while it was outside, it couldn't handle all the climbing/scratching it received from some outdoor kittens.
Oh my goodness...this had me laughing so hard! Especially the part about someones darn chickens! So funny!
