Before the storm

It's the old "a potent low pressure system will move into the northern plains... blah... blah... this storm will produce a significant amount of snow..." winter storm warning. Add that to a snow blower so shiny that it barely has a scratch in it's paint and you get one very giddy husband.

Two to seven inches of snow? Four to six inches of snow? Six to nine inches of snow?

Make up your minds already guys. Unless I'm mistaken, you get paid to tell us this stuff. Not that it matters. It is going to snow. Thank you. I appreciate that. I could tell you the same by simply observing my bouncing-off-the-walls children and grumpy we-will-not-leave-our-poopy-porch chickens.

Oh, what's that? Twenty-five mile per hour wind too?

Awesome. I was hoping to make it into town Tuesday, but it's really not a problem. I have no doubt my overflowing bins of number 2 plastic, steel cans (people, they're really not tin) and glass jars will be pleased to continue spewing their contents across my basement floor. And every time I hear that clinking and clattering as I inadvertently kick an escapee while making my way to the washing machine, I'll continue to be thankful for our local recycling center.

Be still my heart, it truly is a beautiful thing.

It was cold but gorgeous this evening afternoon. I lasted all of ten minutes before I couldn't move my fingers. So much for being the tough prairie woman that I see myself as. I need new gloves, I guess.

But I can wield that axe, I'll have you know!

Actually, it's too cold for that also now. I'm really not sure what my plan is for the extra little rooster who somehow didn't catch my eye when I was whacking heads. He's such a cute little guy, but the hens don't like him at all. At least I know there won't be any shenanigans going on so long as he's at the bottom of the totem pole.

Remember this old thing?

I can't believe it's still there.

But there it is.

This is what 4:30pm looks like here, a few days before the Winter Solstice.

long shadows
{that ball shape in the bush is a snow-covered nest}

Cold, long blue shadows, sparkly snow, precious fading light.

In the peaceful silent stillness, our house rattled beside me. No, it wasn't the wind. It was my offspring.

Feels like a storm coming.

Thanks for taking us with on a walk around the farm. I just love your chickens. Maybe someday I'll have some of my own to smile at. Beautiful captures.

I love the fact that you can use words like "poopy porch" while being completely serious! Love the winter sunset pics. The first one is my favorite. I hope your storm isn't too awful.

You have an incredible ability to make a nasty snow storm look beautiful. But it's still too cold for me. May your rooster rest in peace.

Just reading this gave me cabin fever! I'm actually hoping it will snow here just to give me something to do... like shoveling. I hate being out in the cold for "fun". It's not fun. But while I'm out shoveling, the boy can play. And then it's win-win. Aw shucks. I'll have to take the boy out today now regardless or I'll feel guilty. :(

Stunning photos. Really. My favorite is the first one, though :) And I always love to read your words. Especially when it comes to chickens and roosters. I may or may not dream of having them someday. Also, I don't know which is better. 80F temps here or your freezing cold temps there. After all, it's only 5 days til Christmas, isn't it supposed to be chilly here? I get real confused here in Texas on what winter is supposed to feel like ;) Have a Merry Christmas!

All the photos are great, but I especially love that last one!!

My grandmother was a school teacher for many, many years, and she always said one can predict the weather by watching the children. My grandfather was a farmer and he said the animals can predict the weather. So, I'd say you're right on both counts!! :-)

ehhhh it's 4:50 here and it's totally dark outside. like, had to close my windows because the neighbors can see in because it's nighttime dark.

i sort of wish we had snow. i think i don't like snow because i live in a place where snow = no milk or bread (not that i eat bread, unless it's gluten free) for as long as the snow lasts, and lots of car accidents, and my husband taking 7 hours to get home from work which is 11 miles away. for us, snow is like the apocalypse. super scary and annoying.

but snow as a regular visitor where people reacted calmly and drove slower and had things like shiny snow blowers... i think i could look forward to that kind of snow. :]

you prairie woman you.

Yay for new snow blowers! :D

Love the first shot. And the second one is beautiful.

I'm not ready for another storm yet... so could you send it away from Canada when you're done with it? K, thanks. ;)

Gorgeous wintery photos Jess! Almost makes me wish for a bit of snow....NO!!! Scratch that!! We haven't got diddly doo here in the way of snow...not that I'm complaining. But the one year I'm finally into photography...not a snowy branch to be found. My fave from this post is your snowy branch with the glowy light in the background - WOW! Have a wonderful Christmas! :-) ♥

I so love these pictures! It makes me feel like I’m back on the farm, without all of the chores that go along with it.

The chickens look so comfortable on your porch, and I love the composition of the shot. The gorgeous snow and sunlight pictures are quite special as well.
