What does depth of field mean?
Pay attention, I'll make it so obvious that it hurts.
That shot makes me want to watch Dead Poets Society
Don't worry, I'll be fine.
Look at this perfect, creamy smooth background. I want to lick it.
I can force your attention to the pathetic drowned earthworm that had such a great afternoon with us. At least it's not in five pieces like the other one was.
This next photo, I love it so much. I love the lines, the tack sharp focus on the vertical brace, the angle I grabbed it at... and did I mention how yummy that background is?
Have I totally lost it?
Can you even tell what it is?
The blurred lines and colors really fascinate me in this last shot. It looks like a magical forest just waiting to be explored.
Nope. It's only a tree row where I buried my dead cat, but that could have been my secret.
Depth of field? The nearest to farthest area of a photograph that has an acceptably sharp focus. I prefer narrow. It allows for such an artsy interpretation of what I see through my lens.
You Capture - "Depth of Field"
By the way, that was a corral gate. Did you guess correctly?

Of course I knew that it was a gate! I see them often at the horse barns and various other country type places that we frequent. :)
I love the worm pics... poor worm!
You definitely know how to do DOF ! Great shots !
HOW do you get the background blurry? I just want to know the simple answer, not the confusing techie answer as I have enough to think about right now. (he he he)
Hi Jess. Thanks for your comments :D No, I don't shoot in RAW ~ I don't even have a 'proper' DSLR ~ I use a Canon S3. The shot that you commented about being blown out I COULD edit, I know that, but I actually really like the sun on their faces in THIS shot! Most times I would edit it out, but not this time :)
Love your DOF shots too :) Although I would rather have a slightly bright face than one in shadow! I guess that's what makes photography so diverse and interesting. I often love a photo that my husband can't see why, and vice-versa ;)
Curiously ~ my word verification for this comment is 'shine' ~ LOL!!
Such great examples! The focus on the string he's holding?! Amazing!
Yes, I LOVE that gate shot as well (haha, I knew what it was)! And the apple blossoms (?) are gorgeous! I do have to say- the worm shots made me squirm. And I'm usually not freaked out over worms. Guess it was the stretched-out-skinny factor.
Beautiful! I prefer a shallow dof too.
Love all your shots!
I really love these, especially the last one. Very nice.
The worms are really nice. :) hehe.
as always, beauitful pictures girlfriend.
I licked my screen. I now have smudge marks on my laptop. Otherwise, great shots! ;)
The second one is awesome!!! Totally looks like it's going to grab at you.
I love the gate, too. And the creamy background. ;)
Beautiful shots!!
I am a DOF lunatic, too. =D
I think we should take over You Capture and do more DOF photos... LOL. I love them too. I posted some, then found more and will post them tomorrow, although I am not sure I can link twice. Oh well. Yours are wonderful. Love the Dead Poets Society one.
Jess!
I so recogonize that bokeh! I see you have mastered the moving back and zooming with the beast gives you great background blur. I now have my new 70-200 2.8 II, I did notice the bokeh is not as nice as the original. I enjoy reading your blog and you are as talented a photographer as you are a writer.
That shot of the branches is awesome. Very Edgar Allen Poe! (Found you via You Capture.)
