It found us

I finally said it a few weeks ago. Something about how amazed I was that we haven't been sick, really sick, all winter. No days of school had been missed. No special lotion kleenex had to be purchased for sore noses. The just-in-case, because we live way the heck out in the sticks bottle of Tylenol sat there in the cupboard, unopened.

And then I knew it, I knew the dice had been cast, even as I took this picture on our way home that night:

the road home

Having sat across from them coughing all over us. Watching one of the daughters lay her exhausted head on the table because she was so miserable. Listening to the mom say how they took the son in to the doctor and found out he had pneumonia just a few days prior.

And they coughed. All. Over. Us.

I could say something about that, but I'm choosing not to.

I head downstairs to rescue a load of wet clothes from the washer. It feels good to move. It feels good to do normal daily things again. Things like laundry, feeding my kids, doing dishes. Through the floor over my head I hear the mumbling rumbling of the restless natives.

"Moooooom blah blah (sister's name?) has my blah blah blah..." stomp stomp stomp...

"Mom! blah blah blah (sister) can't have blah blah blah..."

I can't quite make out his words, but I don't hear his sister screaming bloody-murder either so we're still good. Quite frankly, at the moment I'm glad to hear them back to their usual, and worried about my laundry. For real. As in, how much volume do you suppose our septic tank can handle in a day?

"Mommmmmmm..."

My old cracked florescent yellow laundry basket bends under the weight of wet clothes. I trudge back up the stairs to the entryway, that cursed location of my dryer, hoping the dang basket will hold out. "I'll be there in a minute. It can wait."

With surprising calm, quiet, right on the other side of the door, "Mom. It can't wait".

I open the door.

"She has our clothes hamper", although he didn't really seem that concerned about it.

"It's okay."

"She got it from our room."

"No, I did. See I'm doing laundry?"

"Oh."

"You have snot running off your face, that can't wait."

63. That this Mom was way more sick than her babies - because the opposite is never acceptable.

64. That the Dad was here this week, not traveling - because I could not have done this on my own.

65. Standing up without worrying I'll pass out. That's priceless.

66. Abs of steel that can only come from coughing that much, that hard, for that many days.

67. Endless clean running water for the five hundred or so loads of waiting laundry.

68. Having the energy and motivation to actually face that pile of laundry.

69. Feeling human enough to take notice of the dull soft gray blue morning sky that promises snow.

70. Gigantic sticky fluffy flakes floating from the sky an hour later.

71. Burning our trash. Sweet mercy it feels great to light up those germ laden tissues rather than just throwing them away. Maybe you'll just have to trust me on that.

PS. Keep your sick kids at home people, it's not nice to share that stuff.

I so agree on keeping your sick kids at home. I see so many parents let theirkids cough all over the place. And then they wonder why they're always sick.

So glad you're on the mend!

We were there a couple weeks ago. Sadly I work at a hospital - it follows me home no matter what.

I wholeheartedly agree with the p.s.

I'm glad you are better. Being sick is no fun. Being sick while there's stuff to be done is even less fun. But hooray for the strong ab muscles ;) Also, I totally get the burning the trash thing. It was just the thing to do growing up in the country, even better when all the germs are in there.

I'm glad to hear you are feeling better!! I totally agree that sick kids should STAY HOME!! Parents call my office all the time wondering if they should keep their appointment when their child is sick. I know it's not very compassionate, but I always tell them "I don't want it so please stay home!"

Prayers that you will all continue to feel better ~ and be able to enjoy the snow!!

Oh, that sucks! Glad you're feeling better and finding good things again. I can't believe people would drag out sick kids and put them through that. Take care of you! (((germ-free cyber-hugs)))

We stay home when we are sick. I don't understand people who go out and spread their germs everywhere!!

Glad you are all on the mend.

(3 out of 5 of mine are puking right now... fun times. Fingers crossed I don't get it!!)

Even though it's no fun, people *should* know enough to cancel an outing if they've got a nasty cold/flu bug. So sorry you guys have been so sick. :( Feel better. Love the spin you put on everything. Your kids are lucky to have a great mom.

Oh, how I feel for you. Husband has become sick from people that "just can't skip work", while hacking up a lung... Then WE get to share... O, the joy. Not. I hope all gets back to normal, and the laundry basket does well for you. Having a basket give out when you are carrying a lot can make one... um... grumpy.

Sorry to hear you've been hit - hope you are quickly recovering. It's tough enough mothering without being sick. You need all your reserves. :)

Fun post and difficult post in the same breath. Glad you and the kiddos are on the mend. I totally hear you on the "sharing" of germs. I have a few friends that just won't stay home. Riding in the passenger seat of my car sluuurrrrrpppping their nose every 30 seconds while I'm pressing head into my driver's window to try and get away. Yikes.
Everyone around me has had "the cold"....I'm washing my hands with OCD fervor.
Next week will be better for yoiu I'm sure.

Glad you survived! We have been bascially healthy, too, for nearly a year....until a few weeks ago. And it hit us hard.

Happy you're on the mend and happy you got satisfaction out of burning up your germs!

OH man! I am so with you on this one. It seems like common sense. Did this happen to be the outing from a previous post that you were reluctant to go on? The one in which you stated something about being unsocial?

Times like those make me want to be unsocial.

Glad to hear your all doing better. And amen for trash burning!

So glad you're all feeling better. It's amazing how good "normal" feels when you've been to the edge and back with a bad virus.

Totally agree with the p.s. We had people over last night, and I saw two sniffy child noses. We're on guard.

That is so funny! In the gross disgusting sort of way!

But the story is so worth telling!
