A small harvest

I mentioned that we would need some basil for our lunch, and my helpers were keen to collect it themselves. The kids love to play with their food, and honestly, so do I. Assembling bits and pieces into a delicious work of art on your plate is good for the body and the soul.

I'm embarrassed to say how little of anything we've harvested from our pathetic garden this year. But, it's now that time of summer when you don't dare step foot out there without a basket (or two), because you just never know what you're gonna find. Pathetic garden or not, we went through the gate prepared.

going in

I suspected that besides the basil we might want to haul home some yellow zucchini, a giant boquet of swiss chard, maybe a whole bunch of raspberries, and a beet or two.

But THIS?

invader

This does not belong in the garden. Our first order of business was to pick some poultry and toss it out the gate.

Darn chickens.

caught

After securing the perimeter, we started with Garden One. The boys went racing through their maze. Arms flapping, slapping the popcorn leaves. Giggling. Over and over and over.

They slowed down for a minute to check out the sunflowers. We have never grown sunflowers before. I have to admit they're pretty cool. The one plant that is blooming is nowhere near twelve to twenty-four feet tall. That's the other variety, the one that the entire seed packet was crushed. Still, two of them grew.

And then on to Garden Two, and the search for yellow zucchini began. The regular old green ones never grew. Yes, pathetic.

searching

In an effort to distract you from all the weeds in the foreground of that picture (which I did pull that night), check out how tall the cattails are behind the corral fence! Yes, it's true. We were brilliant enough to put our garden in a swamp.

The good news? We almost never have to water. Ever.

I was shocked when the boys pulled two cucumbers out of here. We do not ever have any success with cucumbers. Perhaps with the gorgeous late autumn we are going to have, this year will be different.

finding cucs

But even that delusional thought positive attitude isn't enough to keep my hope alive for a popcorn harvest. Despite that, the sweet corn in Garden Three is looking good.

checking sweet corn

And here, I had planned to post a picture of the boys with their baskets overflowing with colorful goodness.

This poorly closed KinderGARDEN update has been brought to you by a dead camera battery. Better luck next time.

Love these! Especially how GREEN everything is! I also love that you picked some chickens! I keep hoping my garden will grow some, but no luck yet.

Despite my towering marigold, tomato, and bean plants, we've harvested only one jalapeno pepper. That's it...it did turn yellow, so I think that counts for something. But it's not as impressive as picking a chicken.

I adore the baskets your boys are toting to the garden, and the photo of the 3 of you is very sweet.

Shorter sunflowers are a bit more resilient to wind, at least from my experience, and aren't they just fun?

Mmmmm, sweet corn. Hope you've been enjoying it! Do you ever have problems with racoons? I froze 100 cups of the stuff today....and even after all that, it's still doesn't get old to eat fresh.

oh dear. camera batteries die at the most inopportune times.

i love the pics. i tried to pick a favorite, but each time i'd get to the next one, i'd say "oh, no, THAT one's my favorite" until i had picked them all.

i am beginning to regret not planting sweet corn...it's sounding awfully good right now.

I love that first shot...basically anytime you include chickens, I'm in.

Yes we ARE going to have a great fall season. We're putting the energy out to the universe to deliver for us.
Before reading too far, I started wondering about the popcorn :).
Love the sneking thru the fence, the chicken, and the little butt sticking up picking cukes. Fun.

Fun story!
I often send my boxers to "secure the perimeter", and laughed to see you use the term as well. I wonder if it is a line form a movie I'm forgetting?

I also agree with you that we ARE going to have a gorgeous late autumn!

Loved your closing! and all the pics you did get!

Yay I'm not the only one with a pathetic garden! :giggle: My sister has already been freezing stuff. Her garden is not pathetic.

I have had a zucchini or two.. a tomato or two... but I have had a BUNCH of jalapeno peppers! Now if only I were motivated enough to bake them with bacon and sausage. ;)

The chicken picture killed me. :D

I'm embarrassed to say how little of anything we're harvesting this year, too! I'm putting all my hopes on the compost-pile squash!

Even if you can't harvest much (except for chickens- ha!) it still makes for gorgeous pictures!!!!!!

I'm the same way- wandering around not finding what I thnk I'm going to find, but then unexpectedly pulling up something else like a stray potato or sugar snap peas that are still persisting.
