My first thought: Now what the heck did I leave over by the spinach. My second thought: Wasn't the older brother working with his Daddy out here yesterday? What the heck did he leave out here. Must be a plastic sandbox toy.
He left his
It was not a good day. The older brother mournfully gathered up the plastic shrapnel that remained and left it in a respectful pile by our house. He is not only a plumber. He's also the Road Superintendent of miniature towns built around our yard.
I thought perhaps it was a good lesson though. You know, on leaving things lying about the yard.
And then my dear husband admonished me for abandoning a metal electric fence post in the garden corral. It was on it's side in the grass. The mower actually chewed that thing in half and tossed it aside like a toothpick.
I swear, I did not leave it out there. And for the record... he also mowed off the top of our metal ratchet sprinkler and then questioned the boys as to who broke the dumb thing.
Ah, yes. The shiny red object that caught my eye? It was only this.

Swiss Chard. So beautiful. So tempting to grab a handful and...
I can see them over by the barn. I'm giddy as I look for a poo-and-thistle-free area to flop myself down under our orchard (I'll call it whatever I want, regardless of what it looks like). They eyeball me, weighing whether the lure in my hand is worth the trip across the yard.
I hold my breath... waiting for them to run me over.

Then suddenly, the thundering stampede. They're of one mind, once one of them finally makes the decision. A herd of tiny Tyranasaurus race out of the black entrance of their lair, feet pounding the earth, bodies swaying from side to side.
But they're suspicious. What if I'm trying to poison them!

For your own good, Kim, look away. The last time I did this you said I broke your Chard lovin' heart.

They're hypnotized by the sweet prize. Is this a dream? Is it edible?

The insatiable reptiles rip their meal to shreds. It's a vicious attack, the kind of thing that is fascinating but horrifying to watch. Lightening fast, with precisely aimed strikes.
The Chard has no chance.

For a moment, I imagine them the size of a large carnivorous dinosaur. Pretty sure the T-Rex in Jurassic Park was modeled after a chicken.

Then again, I have small children.
Let's not go there.

Oh, wonderful shots! Everything you see and care about becomes wonderful in your camera.
As for the chard, it's one of my favorite greens. I admit, I was jealous of those chickens. :( I need to go and get me some chard now.
Awesome shots! Loved this! Do you eat any of the chard or do you dear chickies get it all? I planted it for the first time this year and I am really enjoying it.
these photos are wonderful. i love chard! we get it from our CSA.
I totally hear ya on the leaving random items in the lawn and then they get blasted into tiny pieces part of your post. It happens to us all of the time. I have lost so many sprinklers that way:(
Beautiful photos of the chickens and the chard.
Do you have any good recipes for the chard? I have tried the baked with salt on them like chips and fried with kielbasa but still know there is more out there to try.
he likes plumbing *and* roads, too?! our kids are cut out of the same cloth.
loved the narration and the pics - glad your girls enjoyed their treat! you are the one that got me hooked on the loveliness of swiss chard. i'm having fun taking pictures of it, but i'm afraid we haven't eaten much of it...and now it is HUGE!
p.s. you were right about the "yam." the grocery store sold it as a yam but i googled a little more this week and it turns out that there are yam yams and there are sweet potato yams and we have a sweet potato yam. yam yams grow in africa. not pennsylvania. ;) thanks for the heads up on the curing thing...will have to remember that if we actually get anything!
I can honestly say I have never had Chard.. But What I can say Honestly is that you photos are awesome..
Awesome, awesome photos, Jess!
Oh, how I laughed at your search for "a poo-and-thistle-free area" - this sounds oh-so-familiar!
And, sigh, the little dinosaurs we love... I have one that lumbers like a T-Rex up the hill behind me, every morning, on our way up to the barn. She's surprisingly fast. :-)
Great photos!
you. are. funny. Great storytelling - in pictures and words! Chard is really the jewel of the garden :) Thanks for sharing.
I.love.your.chickens.
In a blockbuster movie kind of way :)
Fantastic portrayal of your flock. We have chickens also, and it's amazing how quickly they sidle up once they spot food.
Chard is my favorite garden plant. Such beautiful color!
FREAKING adorable. please can i come live with you and watch you feed your chickens?!?!?!?!?!
Your pictures are just so beautiful. And I want some chickens...I wonder how the homeowner's association would feel about that?!? Maybe it's time for me to move out of the 'hood and get some chickens (and practice taking awesome pictures of them)! Very nice.
Oh my goodness I just love this: "A herd of tiny Tyranasaurus race out of the black entrance of their lair, feet pounding the earth, bodies swaying from side to side."
I am SO going to think of this when I see them racing across the yard to me! One of my favorite things to see actually!
This was AWESOME!!!! And now I really wish that chicken coop that was coming my way hadn't broken to bits before it was loaded :( Another story for another time (and no worries, it had been free)
Anyway- that one with the chard in the chicken's mouth is fantabulous!!!
Okay- that is awesome! Love your chickens- I would love to have some of my own. Don't think my homeowners association will let me though :)
Hey!
I just stumbled across your blog from the Inadvertant Farmer, and I love it here! I hope you don't mind having another follower. :)
"Poo and thistle free area"... XD That's awesome.
I *love* the second last shot! :D Open mouth, insert chard...
I grow rainbow chard, just because I think it's pretty. ;) I never remember to eat it... I just notice it when it's huge and towering over the weeds in the garden. ;)
Oooooh la la! Such lovely focus soft focus on your chickens. Loved the sense of impending doom upon your chard. Very cute post chica!
Jess, I love your imagination! I also love these photographs and I applaud your bravery in the face of such wild creatures ;)
I wouldn't know what to do with swiss chard if it bit me in the....ummm...behind....
