Living so far to the wild side of things, like I do, I thought I'd risk it again. Heaven help me.

I'm not a food blogger. Sometimes I like to pretend I am.
I have this handicap that prevents me from being able to follow recipes precisely. Yes, even when baking. That alone should be enough to keep me from putting this stuff online.

I make nearly all our bread myself. I haven't yet mastered tortillas or, obviously, english muffins. During one of our blizzards this winter, I ran out of flour. The last storm? The one before? I can't remember.
What I do remember is that it wasn't a very good thing. I also remember that it was the direct result of me being frustrated with someone, and in my anger neglecting to write flour on my grocery list when I should have.

Being human knocked me flat on my butt once again. Just like it always does. What a curse.
Thankfully, I find forgiveness each time, even if I don't find that extra package of flour that should be in my cupboard.

When the recipe says to "roll out to 1/2" thick" does anyone actually measure that?
No? Good. I didn't think so either.
Check out my super-fancy biscuit cutter! Multi-purpose tools are my friend.

Last time I skipped the part where the
Maybe, just maybe, I'm not always right.
This time I decided to let them rise for half an hour.

And then I forgot about them for two hours.
When they finally caught my eye again, I was severely tempted to toss one of those squishy little discs up to see if it would stick to the ceiling. Kids, don't try this at home.
Ahem.

Look! I put them on the pan!
It was too hot!
Ack! They cooked too fast!

Apparently I need a larger biscuit cutter than a drinking glass, they turned out a little small. But the bigger failure which made my heart beat faster? They're not absolutely wonderfully perfectly round. I briefly wondered if I should have thrown them all at the ceiling earlier and just walked away.
I split one and it was kind of doughy in the middle. I figured this wasn't a problem because they're meant to be toasted.

Toasted, and smothered in local honey... Now this is what I'm talking about!

But the real test... the kid?
"Mommy, they're so good I'm going to eat ten every day! Every day!"
The recipe I sort of followed is HERE.

They look awesome! I'm such a sucker for carbs. Just saw a show about making these from scratch last week and now I'm truly inspired. Yum yum!
Those look delicious!
I love the pops of red from your mixer in the first pictures, really lovely! x
This is wonderful. They sound so good even if they aren't perfectly round! I'm off to check out the recipe.
Uh oh. You may actually have a future as a food blogger. Those look yummy. Have you done your own soft pretzels yet? This recipe from HouseholdDiva6 makes really good pretzels and fabulous pretzel dogs. :-)

You can send your perfectly imperfect English muffins my way anytime!
You can't get better than that! (I almost wrote "batter".) Kids can be so picky and fussy about food, and it's so frustrating. Good for you for persevering. I can't say I'm very determined myself. ;)
I'm even more inspired! I've started making a lot of bread around here this winter and my goal is to make most of our own bread. I don't know why I feel compelled to impose such crazy things on myself, but I'm loving making bread. I feel like I've mastered buns and "fun" breads, but I have yet to find a recipe for every day whole wheat bread that my husband will tolerate for his sandwiches. And there must be some trick to food photography......or maybe it's just all in the lighting like everything else...and my kitchen does not have good lighting.....but these photos are so real I can smell the yeast and feel the dough in my hands. It's never even crossed my mind to attempt english muffins, which we love but I haven't actually bought in years. Thanks for the link to the recipe. Gonna have to check it out. And really, who needs an actual biscuit cutter?
They look yummy to me! :D
so.
cute.
i'm NOT a baker, by any means. but i like living vicariously through your moderate successes! :]
This is my 3rd attempt to leave a message.
I'm determined now. However I think it will be much shorter than the other two. Sorry! You- my dear Jessica- are a bad influence. I say this with a smile on my face and an itch in my fingers to go rifling through my kitchen. You may not be a food blog (I am not either, but I like to try, too.) But I'm now miiiiiiighty hungry for an english muffin.
Yum. - Now to sign off before I'm no longer able to post this. xo!
If I hadn't gone gluten free recently... I would be ALL over making those!! =)
and I can't follow a recipe to save my life either... it is a weakness of mine!!
Yep, my biscuit cutter is a glass, too! I love homemade English muffins and so do my kids. I might have to make some this next week!
Your blog is ALWAYS good for me! I don't follow recipes precisely and there is no way my food would ever turn out as scrumptious as yours! My husband is a good cook and my kids have caught on to that so they ask for "Daddy tacos" and "Daddy bagels" because he does it right :)
Those look just fine and I love english muffins...prefer them over toast anyday ;) I'm not a bread maker...always been afraid of the yeast part...all the kneading and rising stuff...lol Had bread machine once and never used it so we gave it away...didn't like the fact that you had to buy bread machine "mixes"...just kinda ruined it for me. Besides if I was smelling bread baking who knows how much the scale would read...lol Thanks for stopping by my blog and being supportive. Fondly, Roberta
I also sometimes like to pretend I'm a food blogger when I'm really not :-) These look awesome though; so I think you can be a food blogger for the day!
I wish that last muffin smothered in honey could be delivered to me right now.... Yum!
Awesome! They look so good!
