At any rate, lots and lots of fresh basil is a very good thing.

Oh, yeah. And sweet red pepper too. Did I mention the red pepper?
Red peppers make me exceedingly happy and awfully grumpy too. I can't grow a red pepper to save my life. Frost arrives way too early in my mysterious sunken swamp of a garden for any green pepper aspiring to turn red. But there are worse problems to have in life, so I just admit defeat and buy them at the store. You know, like normal people do.
But you can't buy basil that looks this good at the store.

I slapped some mayonnaise on a flour tortilla, and sprinkled it with cayenne pepper. Dangerous, I know. I like to be reckless with my food.

Then I pushed some basil leaves into the mayo. Squish. Squish. Squish. I got so excited I nearly dropped my camera.

Next I topped my artwork with slices of smoked turkey and the glorious red pepper.

I'm not done playing with my food until I've rolled it up and stuck a knife in it a few times. And then I hauled it off across the room looking for different light.

And you see what happens?

A basil thief!

When she's not busy knocking chairs over, sneaking things out of the locked cupboards, or climbing onto the counters... she steals my basil.
You Capture - "In the kitchen"
I kept thinking the You Capture theme this week was "In the chicken". Kitchen, chicken, kitchen, chicken... perfectly reasonable, right? I entertained the thought of being completely annoying and just running with it, but I had technical difficulties.
I can't find my axe.
It could have been very educational. Do you have any idea where a boy chicken's testicles are located? Hmmmm?

Oh my! I'm glad you couldn't find your axe. Too much information about chickens. Also, glad you figured out it was kitchen. The basil stealer was too cute to miss out on! That wrap you created looks amazing, but I would have ruined it by stuffing it full with everything I can find... because that's just what I do -- I lose control of my wraps.
Look at those little hands getting in the picture. Is it weird to play with your food for the sake of a picture...I think not.
Ha ha ha ha... Couldn't find your axe. Um, you are right- that would be educational. I like the last 2 shots. Your lighting in your kitchen is fantastic. Great shots!
The blue in the background of my 2nd shot... a yoga ball! lol...
Yum!! Your photos are absolutely tantalizing! I can almost taste the basil. It looks so fresh and full of flavor. Great shots with beautiful lighting! And the wrap looks divine! I'll have to try that sometime.
I don't know if I want to know where chickens keep their man parts :) Those look yummy!
Looks like a yummy lunch! You have to watch out for those very cute basil thieves! :)
hahaha - Such a creative gal you are! Another fine and enjoyable post...great shots, too!!
Those look yummy!! Love the reflection.
And yes, I got my up-close-and-personal man-chicken education this year. ;) The glee in my sister's voice as she found an especially large pair was a little disturbing. ;)
Oh my! I am SO GLAD you went this route instead :D That wrap looks to-die-for! Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Oh, and the photos are to-die-for too... love the cute little thieving hand shot. Those are the best!
OH how funny!! I can understand the mix up ;) But I LOVE your photos, feeling a little hungry now! Seriously, our littlest ones would get along GREAT! They'd be so sneaky and climbing on EVERYTHING together!
WOWZA! That is the most "gorgeous" food I think I've ever laid eyes upon! And you're sooo right - you got some AWESOME reflection going on from your table. I love that!! I think we have the same table. ;-) Beautiful shots!
I eat almost one red pepper a day. And that basil looks SO good.
Love the shot of that little hand... :)
Great shots of your basil...made a TON of pesto this week. Unfortunately, my photography took a backseat to all of the real kitchen stuff. ;)
Oh and I most certainly do know how to find the boy parts of a chicken...I've disected them...and eaten them. There's a certain yuck factor in that, but I know YOU have tried them too.
Now go find that axe and have a great weekend!
I'm not a fan of the red pepper, any peppers actually but I invision this wil perfectly ripe tomatoes and it makes my mouth water. Yuuuummmm..
Thanks for stopping by my blog. It's so fun to capture your children's insanity in photos, isn't it?
Michelle
Amazing photos!! Wrap looks wonderful - I'm glad you discovered the actual theme. I think I'll gladly stay in the dark about chicken testicles!
That looks like a yummy lunch! Great photos as always.
I could go for one of those right now!! Mmm. Even the red pepper looks good. I don't like green pepper, but there's something about those red peppers... they're delicious.
Awesome pictures! I love the basil thief. :)
wow. your photos are gorgeous, making me so hungry just looking at them.
Those photos are great! Making me hungry!
Thanks for the words of love on my blog...these children keep us up and on our toes. (and early)
I LOVED the pictures here in this post. I would love to eat what you jsut made. It looked SO good. I love basil. I love fresh, and I love your photography. :)
lol, food as art...i guess that's one way to have fun! didn't your daughter make one too?
These are all so great! AND yummy. Even the sneaky hand is yummy!
What awesome captures!
Chicken testicles, aside, I love your shots. Makes me think how fun it would be to be a food blogger. I was particularly impressed by your reflection shots at the end. Beautiful!
I agree about the basil smelling a bit like skunk. And our house had the aroma of skunk last night. I was the only one in our house that it didn't wake up and bother, but I did dream about shooting skunks on your farm. Hmmmmm.
ROFL...my three year old son just asked me yesterday if our rooster had a penis. When you find out let me know!
As always you post has me laughing out loud! kim
What variety of basil is the purple stuff? It's gorgeous!
I am loving your organic style of photography and life. Very inspirational. I grew up on a dairy, and you are making me miss certain smells and activities that I have always taken for granted, like playing in the cotton or four-wheeling all around the dairy, running the ditch banks for exercise.
