I figured the chance of us finding it was actually quite good, since the adults have been migrating through our yard by hundreds and hundreds, these the last two days.
It didn't take long before we were immersed in the magic. We found one!

We got up close and inspected it thoroughly.

{See the hovering fly?}
Then we collected it. Someone giggled because it left a trail of tickles on his hand.

Next we found a super-tiny itty bitty one. So, so small. You may not believe it, but we even found one tinier than this.

But there were plenty of big ones too.

We built a little cardboard mansion and gathered a banquet of milkweed for them. Now we watch and wait.
For me, personally, this is something really special. My Dad got me interested in insects when I was little. I searched year after year looking for Monarch caterpillars. I never found a single one.
You Capture - "Outside"
All photos on this post were shot with the lensbaby 2.0 and the super-wide angle accessory.
Also, yes I have a bunch of pictures of the Monarchs migrating through our backyard, and I did use a real lens for that. I'll get some of those pictures up soon.

Wow... monarchs! I've never seen the caterpillar before! Last experience with any kind of caterpillar one bit me. Yes it was a tiny bite but it shocked the heck out of me and now I'm scared of them.
These are fantastic photos! Looks like you all had a good day!
How was kindergarten?
So exciting! How was the first day for you all?
These are gorgeous! Great shots!
The first day on the kindergarten bus.... oh my heart. I hope it was a wonderful day for sure!
LOVE the caterpillars. Wow. The kids are going to have so much fun with that. I especially love that you made them a cardboard mansion to reside in! You know how to treat your creatures RIGHT! : )
Wishing you all the best with this new venture in your life!
Beautiful shots!
These are awesome! Great captures - as always!
So cool!
This was the first year I found a monarch caterpillar. I never thought about making it a little house to watch it grow!
I need to take a picture of a butterfly for a photo challenge... but I haven't seen one yet! Hopefully before Monday. ;)
You have a lensbaby?! Very cool. I can't wait until I can add a few more toys to my collection.
Great shots too. I love the hovering fly. Have fun watching them grow and change!
Just came by to say thanks for your lovely comment on my blog. My boys would have loved this caterpillar. Can't wait to see the Monarch photos!
I love when my sons find little bugs! Just something about having a little boy!
I tagged you in a little survey in my latest post
What wonderful photos and so educational! I had not idea Monarchs started out as such colorful caterpillars! Great post!
I'm pretty jealous of your lens baby but I'm loving the photos. Have a great weekend!
Oh, how cool! I've only ever seen a Monarch caterpillar in captivity. I did thing of you today, though. I know we're kindred spirits where bugs and other critters are concerned. You would have enjoyed our walk this morning, which I will do a post on eventually.
Sometimes I think I need to take class to get pictures like this. I'm just an auto setting grandma capturing Our Journey Through LIFE! one shot at a time.
Hey I have had computer problems so need to take a couple hours to catch up with your blog young lady. I so enjoy looking at your photos. The monarch catipillars brought back such fond memories. When my kids were younger we made cardboard houses and put one twig through the top of the box so they could make their cocoons. I documented the transformation with my first digital camera and I was not very good at using it. If you would like to see shoot me an email they are on my facebook photo album page. Take Care and keep writing and shooting.
Jess, thanks for sending me the link! I love what you did with the camera lens---very cool pictures!
And how neat---a caterpillar that you had searched for as a child, and now you get to share them with your children. :)
