Cat food

Are these naked blind ugly things baby Grackles? Someone please tell me they are.

There are three or four of them in this pitiful tangled mess of bare-naked baby bird body parts.

They must be.

I swear (usually not on the blog) that this was a Sparrow nest, and these awful-looking things are way too big to have come from those tiny eggs. There was a pair of adult Grackles saying evil things to me the entire time I was up there with my camera, as if I had invaded their space.

Won't Grackles dump other eggs or even baby birds out of a nest and steal it for their own?

That is just plain rude.

If that is indeed the case, I'm thinking Marshall may accidentally get aimed in this general direction. Nature's revenge. Blenderized by a barn cat, or something like that.

So, are they cat food or not?

Cat food. XD That's hilarious!!

I have no idea what they are.

I'm still laughing about the cat food, though. ;)

Ooooh I've read about those nasty birds!! They don't ever make their own nests, they just destroy other birds' eggs and lay their own in the nest, and then the poor duped birds raise the invaders as their own! So sad.

I say, cat food. Mwahaha!

I've heard of them too. But I know them as Starlings.

And I say, cat food. They are mean. nasty birds.

On another point, you mentioned on my blog that the Barred Rock doesn't look so much like a lady. How can you tell? I looked through the hatchery's paraphernalia, and they said the sexing of Barred Rocks is not always accurate. They are a little over five weeks. Any way I can tell for sure?

Thanks for any help you can give me. New chicken owner (except for an unknown breed of rooster I hatched and raised as a kid;)

I couldn't begin to identify those bald babies, but your cat sounds like a force of nature! :)

Grackles do destroy the "contents" of other birds nests and take them over. The cowbird just lays their eggs and lets the other birds feed and raise them. Let Marshall issue justice to the original owners.
