I love these winter night photos, because they make it look as cold out as it really was. Hot cocoa with lots of marshmallows! The windchilll was -17F.
Some people here like to joke that we live in the frozen tundra. But the truth is, there are moments when it is no joke.
Does anyone know what is causing the vertical lines in the sky on the last one?
Thanks everyone. That last shot is 6 seconds, f/1.8 and ISO 800. The trees are illuminated by our yard light. It was a tricky balance to not overexpose the snowy trees, yet still get the stars in. If it hadn't been so cold out, I might have kept at it awhile longer. While I love that shot, it bothers me that the largest tree is out of focus. A narrower aperture and longer exposure might have been better.

Wow, I love the last one! You can see the stars!
Lovely photos. You may want to check in with the optics group at this site for those lines in the last shot - www.atoptics.uk
They have lots of great info there.

Wow! I wish I could capture the sky that way.
