Spring has arrived

"You Capture" theme this week was "Spring".

Why this was such a tough one for me, I'll never know. I could blame it on the jalapeño. I could blame it on my thyroid. I could blame it on the chickens. None of which would be fair.

Actually there was something this week that really threw me, but I'm not ready to talk about it yet (maybe when the apple trees bloom).

Here's the obligatory "Look! Unbelievable! The trees are alive again!" photo.

I can't believe I posted that. Perhaps our 45mph wind today has gone to my head.

Through my head?

Alright, so it's Spring (insert heavens opening and angels singing here).

I turned on the spigot to fill my watering cans.

Upon turning around, the hose which was attached to the spigot was nowhere to be seen. Huh? I looked to the side. There it was, running away from me.

I followed it around the corner of the house, past our front steps, and around another corner where it connected to a second hose which ran the full length of the house, only to connect to yet another hose. The third hose ran around the kid's playset towards two very tall Pine trees.

And this is what I found.

It was obviously the work of my five-year-old boy, who may or may not have an unhealthy obsession with hoses and pipes.

Also, my photog friends, that photo is SOOC (other than resizing, watermarking and a frame). I am feeling very "Heck YEAH!" and not very humble about it, just thought I'd say.

I filled my watering cans because my peas are reaching out toward the sun.

But we're still more than a month away from our normal last frost date, and so I also have these interesting little things. I experimented with one last year. This year I have six. If it goes well, next year I will have an army of them.

Everyone who sees them asks what in the world they are.

Want a peek inside?

A very lucky tomato seedling, safe and warm, getting a head start and stretching it's roots deep into the earth, well before our Spring says it should be able to.

Take that, early prairie Spring.

You Capture - "Spring"

UPDATE:
For those of you who were curious about the little greenhouses, here is a link to the product. It's a ring of plastic tubes that are open on the top. With the tubes filled half-way with water the greenhouse closes for more protection. When they're filled to the top it opens up.

I love the watering can shot!!!

Watering can shot is my favorite too, the soil by you looks so healthy and dark! (our town is all clay and rocks, it makes gardening a challenge)

I am very jealous of your soil there! Tell me, when I get my chickens, will I have soil like you???!!!!
Beautiful photos here...love your little tomato huts!

Thanks guys, I almost didn't include the watering can shot! My garden is in an old cattle corral, and yes, it is the very best earth I could ever ask for (weeds love it too). It's dark and perfect and just a bit sandy, and absolutely full of earthworms. It just crumbles in my hand, so yummy.

Beautiful, as always. I love the watering can, and of course the hose and tree! I think my favorite is the one just below that though, lovely!

You're so funny. I don't know how you managed to do the watering and hunt down the hose with a camera attached, but it paid off and you got a really cool shot of all that water! I love your tomato teepees. I may have to keep that in mind next time I plant tomatoes. What are they made of? (the teepees not the tomatoes)

I loved every picture. I have a soft spot for farms. Really I do! My childhood bff was raised on a farm. I have super FOND memories of spring on that farm.

I, too, love the watering can photo the best, although, really... they're all beautiful. It's funny to me the things little boys find fascinating :) I love your post!!

Great pics and even better story. Your boy was quite literally thinking he should water that tree.

Quick question, farm girl... I want to grow Sugar Peas (the kind you eat in the plump pod that are actually labeled "sugar peas" at the grocery store). I looked at all the seeds at Lowe's and didn't see "Sugar Peas." Any idea what type of pea seeds/plants I should look for? It's important that the pods are edible, but I don't want snow peas (the flat things used a lot in stir fry). Any help would be most appreciated.

I'm another fan of the watering can shot- love the drip!
Good for you in being so far along with your garden! Our garden still only exists in the indoor planting trays. I'm guessing your tomato "tents" are double layered and filled with water, right?

I too love the watering can shot as well. And the wandering hose shot was quite amusing!

ToadMama: I don't know of any varieties of Sugar Peas off the top of my head. But I would start by looking here http://www.seedsavers.org/

Also, I updated the post with a link to the little greenhouse.

I love your pictures! It would be hard to pick a favorite if it weren't for that amazing photo of the sprinkling can with the water droplet! Wow!
