Shooting the moon

The snow crunched under my feet in that certain way.  My jacket protested every move I made with an extra-crisp stiffness.  It proved my suspicion beyond a shadow of a doubt.

It was colder outside than what the website told me.  They can't fool me.

Friday night as I walked out to The Road They Do Not Plow, I briefly wondered why I insist on doing this on the coldest night.  Every time.  But then, it's January in North Dakota and why should I expect anything less?

I sunk my tripod into two feet of snow.  At least I knew it wouldn't blow over.

I yanked the thick fuzzy mitten off my right hand and traded it for a lighter one that would allow me to push buttons and spin dials.  My fingers were already numb.  I looked back toward the warm glow of the house.  Why in the world was I doing this?

Soon enough, as I fumbled around with the gear I had hauled, my beast of a dog realized we weren't going for a walk.  She'd had enough of this nonsense.  I was abandoned as she headed back to her cozy bed of straw in the barn.

And then, I was reminded why I torture myself so.

Standing here under an endless prairie sky, with coyotes howling off in the distance, I feel so small - but not alone.

I stand in awe when a long exposure shows a dark night for what it truly is, in ways my human eyes cannot see.

I don't care how cold it is.  Whether I walk away with decent photos or not, this is worth fingers that hurt for the next two days.  Although, I might stick a thermometer out the front door after I get back to the house, to see how cold it really is.  You know, just for bragging rights.

LOVE the pics. And your narrative was so spot-on I felt like I was there, too. I am so glad you tortured yourself. The dark moon shot is awesome, but I really like the moonbursts, too.

Oh yes! I get this reason. I need a SOLO date with my camera out in the wild with my auto focus turned off. I NEED it now. AND hopefully when the sun is out. Would it be bad if I requested a date night with my camera? I think you understand though.

Laughing out loud at "The Road They Do Not Plow." Hil.ar.i.ous.

And I'm just dying. That second shot of the moon is out of this world...and pun indeed intended. But the moon bursts are pretty amazing, too.

And David Crowder is ringing in my ears again, "the night is lighter than it's hue"....

Your moon shots -- all of them -- are spectacular. It's amazing the different perspectives on the same scene. Really cool. And brave of you. I hate going outside when it's that cold. Oh wait... I do it all the time here in Alberta. ;) It's worth it, isn't it?!

Hi Jess! WOWEE! Happy new blog - I absolutely love the look! Seems like a lot of people are going to Wordpress; which reminds me I wanted to google the differences. I REALLY love the way it looks. And you're just showing off with that moon shot, aren't ya?! LOL! :-) I need to re-do mine... Yours looks FANTASTIC! It was great to hear from you; thanks so much for stopping by. Happy Friday, and have a great weekend! XOXO

I hate going out in the cold... so you're right, I do most of my winter pics indoors. ;)

HI!
So you moved on over, huh? Very cool.
It's taking me a bit to get used to, but I like it.
Blogger was great for my first 1000 years when I was too nervouse to try anything else. But now I don't want lose it as I'm a part of Blogher and Wordpress doesn't let you be a part of that. (or something like that!)
Anyway, my one question was was is areavoices? I'm still in the dark about a lot of things.

Love these pictures! Beautiful shots. I need to get out of the house and spend some quality time with my camera and not be afraid of how cold it is, because I KNOW that it's not nearly as cold here as it is in ND!
