Favorite 10 of 2010

This image is my absolute favorite of the entire year. The boys were showing off the upstairs of their lilac house.

Second fave. He'd been dust bathing with the chickens, and was trying his best to convince me he did not need a bath now that he was in the house. This one took the "people" category of a local contest, which proves that craptastic 1-hour Walmart prints can, in fact, save the day when you've procrastinated and have no other option. Or, possibly no one else entered the contest.

Underwear on the head. Honestly, what's not to love here?

Grandpa's burial ceremony.

That was the day that put to test my theory that I am emotionally detached while I'm shooting. Once I finally put my camera down I was a complete mess. Knowing this gives me hope that one day I might be proficient enough to volunteer for Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep.

Soybeans ready for harvest.

This one cracks me up every time!

awesome egg

And, yes, all three were laid by our chickens.

I can just feel the late summer evening captured here. This is what makes our harsh winters bearable.

Totally random, I was testing my focus and couldn't throw this one away. My baby girl and the pink shoes she chose all by herself.

Open your eyes to the beauty in everything.

The one where he is protesting the bath, makes me think that he would wipe off all the dirt on a towel, and call it good. (I know several boys of that ilk...) Your pics are undeniably wonderful. Keep it up! Those of us who have only now managed to figure out how to get the camera to WORK salute you!

Okay, I knew it...they're amazing and I love them! My favorites are the pink shoes and warm summer evening! And of course, I feel like the pear is a total classic! So beautiful. And dirty boys make great photos too, that one is so cute! I love the clarity.

Also, I totally want to volunteer for that same thing once my babies are bigger and less demanding of my time!

Wow! Very impressive set of photos you've chosen here! I gotta say that I love your little one with his dirty little face, that says 'all boy' to me and underwear on the head is priceless! HAHA and the chicken eggs made me LOL as well ;)

Each time I look at your photos and read your delightful commentary I'm blown away. I love your craptastic dirty boy photo, the underwear shot, pink shoes, and totally understand your fave...the movement it conveys and the POV-wonderful. Wow.

"Dirt" is awesome. The color in your burial ceremony shot are fabulous. I think I remember the eggs, dragonfly, pear and self portrait. All some of your best. I don't remember the pink shoes. I LOVE that shot. That's one you will always treasure. And the underwear? Classic LOLs on that one! Thanks for sharing. :-)

Your pictures are magically beautiful. I have no idea how you just picked ten. No idea.

these are incredible Jess - you should write a book or at least put together a collection of your photographs with your stories in it. I'd definitely buy it!

I love love love love love these shots. Oh! and I like Ashley's idea too! A book would be awesome. I'd tell everyone I know to buy it. :)

Love the dragonfly. I could use some of that warmth and light right about now.

And the dirt bath is awesome.

Jess, these are amazing! As always I am inspired by your work!

I did a shoot for my cousin who's baby was born dead 3 1/2 months before its due date. When I first started I was shaking SO hard. But, as I started taking pictures I was able to step back and do it for the sake of the memories for my cousin. The editing was hard...lots of emotion and tears, but so worth it to be able to give the parents a beautiful lasting memory of their little girl.

My grandfather also passed this year and had a very similar burial which I've only seen in photographs - thank you for sharing yours and contributing to the images I hold in my head for the honor bestowed upon a great man. Lovely, lovely shots, the whole lot.

well, what more can I say after all those comments! I love them all! And even craptastic (hilarious) printing can't touch your photos...especially that one of your son all dirty. That one might be my favorite, but I really love the pear one. It's too hard to choose. I love the mood you created in the grandpa's burial shot. There just aren't many people that can balance both great photography and great editing/post-processing. So glad to have "met" you this year!

Great top 10! :D

Love the shoes. And the eggs. And the underwear is classic. :D

I love the idea of Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep... I don't know if I could handle it, though. I took some pics of our little girl lost at 20 weeks... with our film camera... but she was mine. I don't know if I could do that for someone else. I applaud those who do.

Wow. Thank you everyone! I really appreciate all the kind words.

It's amazing how your picture can make me feel so much. I can literally imagine the sun on my skin in that warm summer day, and feel the sadness of the burial scene.

God truly speaks through your photos about the beauty of life, nature, family, and more. Just fabulous.

awesome shots. love the second one so much!

Lovely shots. I do like the baby girl shoes best, though. Funny that you may have tossed that one. I like that only one foot is in focus. She looks like she's about to take off.

The first one, the one that is your favourite, gives me a migraine if I look too long at it. There's something about out of focus pictures that makes my brain work overtime. I am sure that a REAL photographer would agree that it's a good shot but I can hardly look at it.

The rest of them are delightful.

Wow!
I went to NILMDTS and cried and cried just reading about it.

What a wonderful opportunity to help those who are hurting!

You pictures are awesome! I wished you lived closer so that you could picture my kids for me!
